Canteens

Bota bag, water-skin, canteens, and hydration packs – they are all the same. They are used as water vessels to keep a person hydrated during a long hike or strenuous exercise. In camping, water supplies that will be encountered are likely to contain bacteria and other disease causing agents. Thus, you cannot have a dependable drinking water along the course without doing some purification - or boiling at the very least. Because of this, campers must have their own kit to save them from thirst and dehydration.

Early types of canteen are made up of gourds or animal leather. These types had be kept damp because leaving it empty and unused caused it to crack easily. Some were also made from glass with woven basket covering. Though these types are often visually appealing, they are very fragile and break easily.

Modern canteens are made from either metal or plastic. Metal types are typically used by soldiers during training or war, and are very durable and light. Plastic types often use polyethylene or polycarbonate making them lighter than its metal counterparts. You can also expect plastic type to have almost the same toughness offered by metal. A good quality hydration pack is also another variation. Though they were originally designed for bikers, smaller sizes were later made available for other outdoor activities such as walking and camping. It is basically a water bladder placed inside a backpack with tubing that extends outside the bag. It can provide cool water because of its special rubber construction- Camelbak has mastered this niche. Canteens always comes with straps or clips so you can easily carry them around while camping. Always have it with you to have a refreshing cold drink and don’t risk dehydration.
